about

On ‘Stumble’ Tom questions why, when we get into such good routines, it is so easy to fall off them and how much harder it is to get back into them.

After a rough lockdown with a young child struggling to sleep through the night. Tom would take an hours run every morning to clear his head and take time for himself. The first mile would be the toughest, and as he ploughed through it he drew a comparison with starting up and driving his beloved van ‘Pickle’ on a cold morning. That stiffness and clunkiness over the first stretch of driving, until eventually the engine ran smooth and everything became a little easier. This led to a musing that with so many things, if you keep running, they stay easier. Even when life’s many hurdles get in the way.

With this message about perseverance in trying times, Tom continues a run of songs exploring life, identity and health, along with a little nod to Pickle and his lockdown listening to Tom Waits and Sean Rowe.

lyrics

I'm old and I'm stubborn
I'm bitter yet fair
I'm warning you Brother
I've little less care
Cross me today son and you'll not cross me twice
I'm cold on the inside there's a battle for light

One foot front of other
Another claw up the hill
Each pace is a struggle
I battle on still
For when I reach the top I know it's level for sure
I'll rest on up while I can making ready for war

Keep running
Keep running

I know what to do but I can't stick
I stumble again
I stumble again

I know what to do but I can't stick
I stumble again
I stumble again

Is the sun rising early or the moon running late
With both gods up in the sky there's magic that's made
With a crunch underfoot
I'll be right when I'm home
With my spirit restored I'll creep back up to my throne

Keep running
Keep running

I know what to do but I can't stick
I stumble again
I stumble again

I know what to do but I can't stick
I stumble again
I stumble again

I know what to do but I can't stick
I stumble again
I stumble again

I know what I'll do I'll learn to stick
I won't stumble again
I won't stumble again

I know what I'll do I'll learn to stick
I won't stumble again
I won't stumble again
